What are coaches really selling?

Most coaches describe what they do. The coaches with full rosters describe what they achieve.

If someone asks what you offer and you say "monthly coaching for $X," you're selling access. If you say "I get first-time triathletes across the finish line," you're selling an outcome. Those two answers attract completely different people and create completely different coaching relationships.

Most coaches sell access: a certain number of sessions, check-ins, workout plans, messages per week. The implicit promise is "I'll be available." That's not wrong, but it puts the athlete in the position of deciding how much of you they need. Which turns the purchase into a price comparison. They're not asking "can this coach help me finish an Ironman?" They're asking "is this worth $200 a month?"

When you sell an outcome, the decision changes shape. The athlete asks "can this coach deliver what they claim?" which is a question about fit and credibility, not price. The frame shifts from "is this affordable?" to "is this person the right one to help me reach this goal?" That's an easier sale, and it selects for athletes who are committed to the goal before they've even messaged you.

Retention looks different too. When an athlete buys access and life gets busy, their first instinct is to pause. When an athlete has committed to a specific goal - a first Ironman, a Boston qualifier, a sub-2 half marathon - pausing feels like giving up on the goal, not just cancelling a subscription. The coach becomes part of something that matters, not a service the athlete consumes when convenient.

None of this requires changing what you actually do. It's a communication shift. "I coach endurance athletes to their first long-course triathlon" is a sentence that self-selects for the right athletes before they find you. "Online triathlon coaching" is a sentence that could mean anything. You do the work that gets athletes to their goals. The question is whether the way you describe your coaching makes that visible to the person reading it.

Action: Look at how you describe your coaching on your website, in your enquiry reply, or in your social bio. Is it describing what you do, or what athletes walk away with?
